Planetsserver down? Empty Planetsserver down?

Post  the elder one Thu Jul 09, 2009 3:23 pm

Salut,

wondering what's going on at Hannover Uni. I got no access to the planetsserver-site nearly whole of the Wednesday.

My email with the .trn was not refused, but I've got a delaying-message (with no more infos).

@ gamemaster: maybe we got to delay the current turn-deadline, too. Please keep an eye on it.

Thanks, t.e.o.

Planetsserver down? Empty Delays

Post  Admin Sun Jul 12, 2009 5:59 pm

I tried to send an inquiry to PS team and it "bounced" with the following message.

<team@planetsserver.com>... Deferred: Connection refused by planets.unix-ag.uni-hannover.de.
Warning: message still undelivered after 4 hours
Will keep trying until message is 4 days old

Whatever their problem, it must be pretty serious. I'm trying to keep an eye on it, but without access to the web site I can't even put our game on hold.

Salut,

yes, I know about. Every time I'm leading a game... very soon the host breaks down.
Must be an hacking opponent from former times - from the Roman Empire or so.

(This started with a big meteor impact about 65 mio years ago. Just when we installed comfortably ruling the world)

Sigh, t.e.o.
(starting to put a beer in. Good plan, Starbuck)

Planetsserver down? Empty They are alive!

Post  Admin Mon Jul 13, 2009 2:55 pm

Current web site message.

Planetsserver is down. Sad
Due to serious hardware problems Planetsserver is not available at the moment.
We are really busy fixing this but it may take some time.
Please be patient, we do our best!
Sorry for the inconvenience.

--------------
RE: Hosting.
No, it doesn't take anything special. Both Steel Rat and I hosted Spacenet Planets games on pretty standard computers something like 10 years ago. I also set up all kinds of special games. In fact, I think I actually had dial up at the time. Baer owned our web site URL, but I took care of the web maintenance. When you have a team working on it, it's a lot less work.

But we weren't nearly as automated as most host sites are now. There are a lot of special hosting software available now that we didn't have then. We used to use some pretty basic batch files to do most of the repetitive tasks.

Planetsserver down? Empty Latest News

Post  Admin Tue Jul 14, 2009 7:44 am

Latest news:

* 14.07.09:
The system drive broke down, probably Thursday, July 9th.
Unfortunately two of us were on holiday so Mr. Murphy did his job pretty accurate. Wink

Yesterday we migrated the server to our new virtual server which was intended anyway but not under these circumstances. Wink
At the moment we are busy bringing up email communication for planetsserver.com before going on with installing all relevant system services as well as the web application.

We try to keep you informed on this web site.

Planetsserver down? Empty Re: Planetsserver down?

Post  Starbuck Tue Jul 14, 2009 1:22 pm

Well, now, instead of just hanging me out in lala land when I try to go there, I now go to a new message, as follows:

Not Found

The requested URL /index2.html was not found on this server.
Apache/2.2.11 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.6-3ubuntu4.1 with Suhosin-Patch Server at www.planetsserver.com Port 80

Any of the puter geeks out there know if this is good news? or bad?

Apache is an open source server software and the message was probably automatically generated when their hard drive crashed. When I go to their web site now, I get the announcement I have posted here.

If you get that error message again, you might want to refresh the page in your browser.

Planetsserver down? Empty Re: Planetsserver down?

For those not monitoring the PS web site:

Stardate: 15.07.09:

The logs show I/O problems starting on Thursday, July 9th at 00:23.
Fortunately the system partition seems to be rarely damaged. We could restore the biggest part and it is being copied to the new server at the moment which takes some time.
The next step will be the installing of all system services and restoring the backups of all games which were saved on a different hard drive.

Hopefully planetsserver will be back by the weekend but we can't promise by now.

Planetsserver down? Empty Do it yourself

Post  the elder one Thu Jul 16, 2009 3:26 am

Salut,

in the meantime you may do it like me (= the elder idiot): crash your gama database completely, so that at turn 80 any former information is blowin' in the wind. Just double start DOS and hit some crazy keys with the ctrl or shift-control key (due to enraged inputting Embarassed ).
Murphy did his job real fine; as this was the situation, when my crystal ally dropped und all the securing webs are now enemy webs... Don't mind - I don't see them any more...)

But no hope for you: this was another game (hehehe!). Anyway - it's to say: you don't need hardware crashs to get problems.

Before I forget to mention: Petrock! There's the optimal thread or you! Here! Just head up to oakhurst.ca and have an eye at "happy thoughts" (uaahahahahaha Twisted Evil )

CU t.e.o. aka Gert

Planetsserver down? Empty latest news

Post  Admin Sun Jul 19, 2009 10:12 pm

Latest news:

* 19.07.09:

We made our old MySQL binary work on the new server (Thanks Linux! Try this with a windows machine Wink and we could migrate the database tables to the current format (MyISAM).
The next step now is setting up the web server.
Probably the forum won't work in the beginning due to a not supported PHP version but first we concentrate on bringing back online the hosting application.
* 18.07.09:

Tomcat is running again but the database backups are not compatible with a current MySQL version. :-(
We installed different old MySQL versions but some tables could not be read yet.
We keep on trying and keep you informed.

Planetsserver down? Empty Turn 31 end game

Post  Admin Fri Jul 24, 2009 6:46 pm

Planetsserver web site is up enough for me to access Game Master screen. So I entered instructions to end game at turn 31, which my planets client says was the last turn we received. Hopefully, that will end the game.

However, be careful until we get confirmation that the PS game is over and our restart with RC World starts. I can see where we could get an overlap.

Looks like the server is back up... The turn is still green and says it runs next on Tuesday
Wouldn't take a new turn submission tho... So, if it does come back up before Ricki gets us set up, do we continue this one? or scrap it for the bright shiny new RCWorld setup? confused

I would say that we just wait for RC W restart.
I sent instructions to the PS server to end the game at this turn. But, I don't know if it will run host and then end the game or end the game and not run host.

I also asked Ricki how long it will take to get our new game running. I am waiting for reply now.
